Nunc Dimittis & Gloria

Choir (SSAATTBB)

This piece combines the traditional practice of Anglican or English chant with modern rhythmic notation. These chant sections - highlighted by the use of diamond note heads and half bar lines - should be sung in a unison speech rhythm and with direction should be joined with the rhythmic sections. Combining these two styles pays homage to the Anglican choral tradition, while balancing a newer, more modern style of choral writing.

There are two moments where three parts sing an open chord pedal which mirrors the traditional chant and puts this directly against the dense chords. These sections should be allowed to '􏰀oat' through the other chords without detracting from the chordal section and should co-exist and merge together.

The piece shall be 􏰀exible in tempo allowing for the speech rhythms to be highlighted, and liberties can be taken with shaping phrases and the ends of verses.
